How is this recycled fibre beach towel made?
These recycled fibre beach towels are made from 100% recycled materials including plastic bottles. We have sourced them from a supplier who works directly with fishermen to help clear up our planet. Fishermen (and women!) collect plastic bottles when out at sea and bring them back to shore. The PET bottles are selected and recycled, then made into PET chips. PET stands for polyethylene terephthalate which is the chemical name for polyester. PET is clear, strong, and lightweight plastic that is widely used for packaging foods and beverages, but can also be made into a fabric, polyester, which can be found in lots of clothes. Due to the versatility of this compound, the PET chips are converted into RPET yarn (recycled PET yarn). At the weaving stage, the RPET yarn is mixed with pre-dyed recycled cotton and voila! An eco-friendly beach towel is created! We have added our Go Outside range logo as a reminder to enjoy the outdoors and our Chimney Sheep logo to remind you of us (you lucky things).
As well as the 20% of the profit that goes towards our Community Interest Company, Buy Land Plant Trees, 5% of the supplier profit goes towards The Ocean Cleanup which helps to clean up our waterways. A double whammy of planet-friendly goodness!

Where can I use this recycled fibre beach towel?
As you’d well expect, this recycled fibre beach towel has been tried and tested by the Chimney Sheep team, who have all loved it. The towel has been used for a whole host of different things. We’ve had people use it as a beach towel, a pool towel, a post open swim towel, even! One of our colleagues took it on a couple of camping trips and used it as a camping shower towel and on the next trip, used it as a blanket – the towel got a big tick for each use! We’ve also used it as a picnic rug on dry days (which granted, are few and far between in the Lake District) and it has been great. We paired it with our recycled plastic tableware and recycled plastic coolbag for the ultimate eco-friendly picnic set!
Why is it important to use recycled materials?
As we mentioned, this recycled fibre beach towel is made using 100% recycled materials including plastic bottles instead of virgin materials. By using recycled plastics, it means that no new plastic has been created to make this towel. We are all pretty well versed on why the creation of new plastic is bad – most plastic is made from chemicals that come from the production of fossil fuels and once it has been used, then disposed of, it sticks around in the environment for ages, threatening wildlife and spreading toxins.
However, plastic is a useful material in lots of contexts due to its versatility and durability. Sometimes, non-plastic alternatives just don’t do the trick. So instead of saying a big fat no to ALL plastics, we should instead be choosing to buy items made of recycled plastic rather than supporting the creation of new plastics. Besides, we all recycle most of our plastics now, so what is the point in doing that if we don’t buy items made of recycled plastic? If we don’t, there won’t be enough of a demand for all the recycled plastic, and it will just end up in landfill! Less than ideal! Plus recycling plastic is much more energy efficient versus creating new, virgin plastic.
